ARE FEAR AND ANXIETY STOPPING YOU ?

ARE FEAR AND ANXIETY STOPPING YOU ?

“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 KJV

Fear is the one thing that can overcome any man, woman, or child regardless of their physical strength, once fear has been accepted as an option.

Power, Love, and a sound mind are all important. However; satan only need to use one against us to to steal all three gifts from us. Our minds are the perfect breeding ground for the seed of fear to be planted and to grow rapidly. Where fear resides, its symptom, anxiousness soon dwells. Our mind, seeded with fear and anxiety, will often magnify our emotions and render us powerless, unable to give or receive love, and mentally incapacitated to some degree. If fear takes hold in our mind it can rob us of the blessings that God has for us.

Fear is a powerful emotion and should not be taken lightly; though it can be powerful we must never give fear power over us. Fear is a survival instinct. Fear is a trigger emotion that warns us that we are in harms way and that we need to take action immediately to secure our safety.

However, there is a huge difference between rational and irrational fear and, I am convinced, irrational fear is by far the most dangerous of the two types. When faced with rational fear there is most likely an identifiable threat. Once identified a real threat can be address and removed, once again restoring a feeling of safety. An irrational fear bears no or very little real threat but has the ability, by feeding on the minds imagination, to grow stronger with each passing thought. Fear can become so powerful that it can render us, as its victims, immobilized. Irrational fear can steal all qualities of life. Fear and anxiety are satans favorite tools, since he can gain power over us while giving us no tangible recourse to fight back.

It is interesting to note that fear and anxiety share strong similarity. Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or is a threat. Fear means to have feelings of anxiety concerning the outcome of something or the safety and well-being of ourselves or someone else. Fear is the feeling that there is a possibility of something unwelcome or unpleasant occuring. Anxiety means a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease caused by the fear that there is a possibility of something unwelcome or unpleasant occuring.

The Bible is packed with examples where God’s people feared enemies even though God told them they would prevail. Such as Genesis 20:11 KJV when Abraham feared for his life because of Sarah, or when God told the Israelites to take possession of Jericho but they allowed irrational fear rob them of their promise land.

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1 KJV

Many will say they do not struggle with fear at all… but are you dealing with anxiety of any kind?

What fears and anxieties do we, do you, allow to take power over our minds and lives?

Fear (and anxiety) of what the future holds
Fear (and anxiety) of the loss of our relationships
Fear (and anxiety) of our ability to survive after the loss of a loved one
Fear (and anxiety) of health issues
Fear (and anxiety) of the process of aging
Fear (and anxiety) of finances
Fear (and anxiety) of making decisions
Fear (and anxiety) of taking or not taking a job
Fear (and anxiety) of change
Fear (and anxiety) of failure
Fear (and anxiety) of success
Fear (and anxiety) of judgement
Fear (and anxiety) of being imperfect
Fear (and anxiety) of death

Do any these fears and anxieties reside just under the surface, even if we claim to have them under control? Are they present even without any real evidence that there are threats at all?

The best way around fear is through it. Recognize your rational and irrational fears and anxieties. Make a list of every fear and anxiety you have, regardless of how insignificant it may seem. Try to clearly define the root and effects that fear and anxiety are having over you and your life. Then, on your own or with professional assistance, work through to clearly identify, address, and disarm each rational or irrational fear and anxiety so that they has no further power over you. It is a process so be patient with yourself and take your time, listing every fear and anxiety as they are revealed to you.

Do not let fear overcome your thoughts or weigh heavy on your heart. Whatever you find that you fear take it in prayer to God and ask Him to do according to His Word. He will strengthen you and cast away your fear and replace it with His strength and His peace.
