GIFT OF SILENCE
GIFT OF SILENCE
It can be difficult to guard our tongue. We live with people, work with people, commune with people…everyone with something to say and each one wanting to be heard.
Silence takes more wisdom and self discipline than speaking volumes. It requires that we be humble and put the other person in a greater place of importance than ourselves.
Silence requires that we respect that the other person has something to say and deserves our undivided attention while being heard. Rather than us listening to the speaker while we are planning our retort, our response, or our agenda.
We are told that talking to much can lead to sin. We can certainly talk ourselves into a place of trouble and later wish we had just kept our mouth shut.
Even when we want to insist on the other person hearing us because we feel it is for their own good, we must listen first. It is impossible to speak life giving, strengthening words to uplift, heal, or even correct if we have not truly listened to what they have to say.
Although bound in a variety of dialects- people speak from their heart. Their words may be coated in positivity, criticism, hate, or vulgar language but, the message underneath reveals the condition of their heart.
When we are heard we feel validated, respected, relieved, and loved.
Listen first, feel the heart of their words, and then prayerfully answer. Don’t preach at them, this will be received as judgmental, but be certain of the source of your response.
Every message doesn’t have to be accompanied by a brow beating with your Bible. Even Jesus chose times to deliver a message – a word in due season- without revealing Himself.
Go in Silence, listen with your heart, and love people.
